IKEA’S GOT NOTHING ON ME!!!

Our cabinets have finally taken on their final forms after careful placement of the door hinges. We opted for European hinges that require a special method of installation but give a stealthy look with smooth action. Below is the process:

Boring out mortises in the back of the doors
Inserting hinge cups into the door mortises and fastening them via screws

After screwing the baseplate of the hinge into the side frame of the cabinets, adjustments were made to center the doors:

All doors installed and mocked up countertops for cutting to size
FINISHED PRODUCTS!

I feel like a proud parent, showing off my cabinet children.. look how handsome they’ve turned out.

All that’s left is to paint the units white, stain and affix the countertops, and install latches on the drawers and doors. Maybe the 9th installment of the cabinetry saga will be the very last! Can you believe that our cabinetry started off as this?

Cabinet carcasses

We felt it was about time to move onto another part of the project — the ceiling. Getting started on this task will help us finish the walls and also get around to starting the upper cabinetry. To be honest, it felt good to do something other than to work on the lower cabinets. After a quick trip to Home Depot to pick up some cedar planks, we used the table saw to cut them to 3" widths. About an hour later, the first coat of stain was applied.

Ceiling planks, before & after

While the stain is allowed to dry, allow me to share with you our plan for the ceiling. First, we will tack up some black felt to serve as a backdrop and to seal our insulation into place. Our stained planks will then be cut to size and fixed to the ceiling crossmembers via self-tapping metal screws. Rather than be butted up against each other, we will leave a bit of a space in between the planks for the black felt to show through and give off a “floating ceiling” vibe. Recessed LED lights will be installed down the middle plank, illuminating the center alley. We will also build around and finally install the inner trim of the roof vent. Check back for our next installment to see if our ceiling plans go as smoothly as we think they will.
